Decimal vs binary units
Decimal (SI): 1 KB = 1,000 bytes. Used by drive manufacturers and network speeds.
Binary (IEC): 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Used by operating systems when reporting file and RAM sizes.
This is why a "1 TB" hard drive appears as ~931 GiB in Windows — the drive is 10¹² bytes, but Windows reports in binary units where 1 GiB = 2³⁰ bytes.

What is the difference between GB and GiB?
1 GB (gigabyte) = 1,000,000,000 bytes (SI decimal). 1 GiB (gibibyte) = 1,073,741,824 bytes (IEC binary, 2³⁰). Hard drive manufacturers use GB; operating systems traditionally report in GiB — which is why a "500 GB" drive shows as ~465 GiB in Windows.
How many bytes is a terabyte?
1 TB (SI) = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (10¹²). 1 TiB (IEC) = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (2⁴⁰). The difference grows at each prefix level.
